With all the grim news this past weekend about the passing of Whitney Houston, any good news would be welcome. Lady Gaga has announced that her Born This Way Foundation will officially launch on Feb. 29, 2012, at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre. That's pretty good news, indeed.
The foundation, which will be run by the singer and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, will work to explore ways to reach youth, and create a new culture of kindness, bravery, acceptance and empowerment focusing on issues like self-esteem, anti-bullying, mentoring, career development, and advocacy. The multi-Grammy winner will be joined by policy makers, non-profit organizations, foundation leaders, and young people themselves who are working to create a better world.
Cynthia Germanotta told sources that the foundation was conceived out of Gaga's passion to create a world where people are kinder to each other, and are accepted for who they are. In addition, she said in a statement that her daughter has experienced many of the struggles that our youth go through today, and can identify with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Gaga was able to turn her struggle into determination that has seen her flourish as a successful singing star.
The Born This Way Foundation is a joint-effort with the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The California Endowment and The Berkman Center at Harvard and will "explore the best ways to reach youth and create a new culture of kindness, bravery, acceptance, and empowerment," according to a press release.
"BTWF will lead youth into a braver new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be," a statement reads.
"Lady Gaga will help empower and give voice to young people who find themselves overwhelmed, under-supported, disconnected, isolated, bullied, or struggling," said Dr. Bob Ross, the CEO and president of The California Endowment. "This brand of leadership is sorely needed in today's world."
Gaga has won multiple Grammys, released three platinum selling albums, including her latest album, Born This Way, of course, and has a massive online presence: The singer has over 15 million Twitter followers and 44 million Facebook fans. To say that she is in a place of influence would be an understatement.
Now it has been announced that none other than TV guru Oprah Winfrey will appear alongside Gaga as she formally unveils BTWF at Harvard University on Feb. 29, when guests will hear about the research, education, and advocacy foundation.
I remember Gaga was talking a while ago about wanting to have a meeting with President Obama about the state of the youth, and bullying, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. How important did she think she was that she could assume the President of the United States would meet with her so she could convince him bullying was bad? But it seems she's basically done the next best thing, and more than most celebrities in recent years, so my hat is off to her. Hopefully she can be an asset in the fight against the growing problem of bullying, and by example, show that negative experiences don't have to cripple you later in life.

Hmmm, maybe after all this brouhaha, she can donate her body to science as an example to where humans went wrong - oh by the way Laddy GuyGuy, how about those fans of yours' cyber bullying Adele simply because she's more talented than you?

Bravo Lady Gaga! It is great to see you put such a positive message out there in a big way! My daughters laugh at me for being a fan. But I admire your talent as a musician, singer & songwriter. Now I also admire you as a great person! My dream is to try to do the same through golf for youth here in southern Ontario, Canada. On the music side, your duet with Sugarland was awesome! You wrote a real winner there!
