Today, February 8, is Let's Talk Day at Bell. Aiming to encourage people to talk about mental illness, Bell will donate 5¢ for every text sent, long distance call made, or retweet of their official @Bell_LetsTalk page.

I wasn't asked to write about this. I think it's a great cause, and in participating, you're basically helping generate free money at no real cost to yourself.

Spokesperson Clara Hughes, a six-time Olympic medal winner, has publically spoken about battling depression.

Last year Canadians made a total of 66,079,236 text messages and long distance calls on Bell Let’s Talk Day – meaning the company added another $3,303,961.80 to the $50 million it has already committed to Canadian mental health.

I have written about suffering from anxiety before, and I think that, whether you participate in the Bell event or not, comunication is key in helping to bring people out of the shadows of mental illness. So, today, and any other day, don't be afraid to reach out to someone you care about, or are concerned about, and let them know how you feel.

On a lighter note, here's a dog watching table tennis:

personality disorder is playing vital role in mental disorder. http://www.genericwebpharmacy.com

"Mental illness is NOT caused with messing with the chemistry in the body, it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain."

personality disorder has been playing role in mental illness

Any one with half a brain knows that putting chemicals into your body with mess with the chemistry of the body esp SSR inteactions etc. You'd have to be a mental midget not to realize this. You mess with the balance of seritonin you will definitely elicit mental health problems...guaranteed

Yes- Check your inforrmation...
Mental illness is NOT caused with messing with the chemistry in the body, it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. People use and abuse drugs because of an undiagnosed mental illness. Maybe you need to reread the studies. MAYBE SOMETIMES, BUT STUDIES HAVE SHOULD THAT USING CHEMICAL DRUGS CAUSES MENTAL PROBLEMS THE WERE NOT PRESENT PREVIOUSLY. GET YOUR FACT STRAIGHT. I PERSONALLY KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD THAT HAVE FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF THIS. SO DON'T TRY TO TELL PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY WHILE YOU SMOKE YOU CRACK PIPE AND DO ECSTASY ETC ETC.

My wife became depressed when our son was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 5. It was difficult for her to overcome it, but she was able to, once she began talking about it.

Although I agree that we shouldn't call people dysfunctional, I know that depression is an illness. Mental illness is real, is related to a chemical imbalance in our bodies and needs to be better understood to be commented on with any degree of intelligence. I was 'officially' diagnosed with Depression after many years of night terrors and 'dark moods'. I got good (as a kid) at hiding how I felt, and was able to mask it through most of my adult life as well. Unfortunately, what brought my diagnosis to the forefront was the turn that the illness took after my daughter was born. I (fortunately) did not have thoughts of hurting her or myself, but I became obsessed with the fear that someone else would harm her and what I would do to them. The world doesn't always understand that Depression isn't just about a patient hurting themselves... There is a real potential that they could hurt others, mostly out of 'doom driven' fear that the other person is threatening them or someone they care about.
I am thankful everyday that I was diagnosed, at least I can look myself in the mirror and be confident that I can do something to help the person looking back. I don't just count on medication either, I attend a support group, have regular counselling, and do take a minimal medication. If I'm not taking care of myself, then I can slip into the 'darkness', but I never use it as an excuse to be less than I can be.
Take care, all, may you find peace with whatever state of mental health you are in... And if I ever meet normal, someone let me know, cause I'm not sure its out there.

A lot of mental illness is caused by messing with the chemistry in the body...this is why drug users end up with mental problems,,,yes even pot smokers if they have a particular genetic suseptibility...lots of studies on this. wish they would teach this in schools

WHAT....dude Dunphmeister your NUTS!

Mental Illness is not an Illness, our brains are just wired differently. When we stop calling it an illness or a desorder or people who are different are dysfunctional then we will all be better off.
