With two hugely successful bands to his name, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl certainly knows a thing or two about what it takes to survive the challenges of inter-band politics, and the pressures of stardom. So it makes sense that FX, the Fox Entertainment Group cable channel, is developing a 1/2 hour comedy with Grohl and comedian Dana Gould.
The show, yet to be titled, would revolve around a rock band on the verge of stardom and breaking up, all at the same time. The story would show the band seeking professional counselling from a couples' therapist, as they are on the brink of "divorce." Gould would write and executive produce the show with Grohl.
I think it will be interesting, although I have often been disappointed by how bands are portrayed onscreen. Hopefully there will be the right degree of realism, and an avoidance of the classic cliches that Hollywood always assumes are part of the rock musician's life.
This is not the first show for the network involving a rock star. FX is also working on a project with Red Hot Chilli Peppers' singer Anthony Kiedis. The show was first in development with HBO, with the producers of Entourage attached.
Scar Tissue will be based on Kiedis’ autobiography of the same name. The book follows a young Kiedis watching his father sell drugs to famous celebrities. In the following years, Kiedis tried drugs, liked drugs, became addicted to drugs, and finally managed to get clean about a decade ago.
Russell Brand, sort of a rock star, is also getting a show on FX! Strangely Uplifting will give Brand a platform to share his take on hard and soft news, and anything else that interests him.
“I’d like this show to be news and topical comedy, stripped of all nonsense, stripped of all subterfuge,” Brand has said. “These people in the news, they’re filling our minds with sh*t glitter... (Even) if I’ve done something actually newsworthy, then I’d cover it."
So, the question is: where's my show?! CTV, I'm looking your way...
